Why use a White Screen?
This black screen tool fills your whole display with pure black (#000000). Use it to find stuck or bright pixels, check how evenly your monitor shows dark scenes, turn off an OLED screen without turning off the device, or simply get a dark, distraction-free screen. It works on phones, laptops, monitors and TVs, with nothing to install.
How to Use the Black Screen
- Click the full-screen button in the bottom-right corner of the preview.
- For testing, turn your screen brightness up and dim the room lights. For relaxing or focus, turn brightness down.
- Press Esc on a computer, or tap the button again on a phone, to exit.
- Need a file instead? Choose a size and click Download to save a black image.
What a Black Screen Reveals
- Stuck and hot pixels: a pixel that stays lit (red, green, blue or white) shows up as a bright dot on black. On a white screen you would miss it.
- Light leaks on LCD monitors: bright patches in the corners or along the edges. To tell normal glow from a defect, follow our backlight bleed test guide.
- Clouding and uneven dark areas: large, blotchy lighter areas, most common on LCD TVs and VA panels.
- OLED behavior: on an OLED screen, black pixels switch off completely. Any dot that glows on a black OLED screen is a stuck pixel.
A black screen cannot show dead pixels, because a dead pixel is also black. Check for dead pixels on the white screen instead.
Everyday Uses for a Black Screen
Saving Power on OLED Screens
OLED and AMOLED phones, laptops and TVs use almost no power for black pixels, because those pixels are turned off. A black screen can keep a device awake (for example while music plays or a download finishes) while using less battery than a bright screen. On LCD screens the backlight stays on, so the savings are small.
A Dark Screen for Focus or Sleep
A black full screen hides notifications and bright interfaces, which is useful when you are listening to a lecture, meditating, or keeping a laptop on at night without lighting up the room.
Hiding Your Screen Quickly
Presenters, streamers and teachers sometimes switch a second display to black between slides or scenes so the audience is not distracted.
Clean Background for Photos and Video
A black display can act as a dark backdrop for small product shots, or show a “screen off” look on a device in a video.
Tips for Accurate Results
- Let the monitor warm up for 10 minutes before judging dark uniformity.
- Use full-screen mode so the browser bar does not hide the edges.
- Take photos with your phone at normal exposure. Phone cameras exaggerate glow at long exposures and can make a normal screen look faulty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a black screen save battery?
On OLED and AMOLED screens, yes, because black pixels are switched off. On LCD screens the backlight is still on, so the difference is small.
Can a black screen cause burn-in?
No. Burn-in comes from bright, static elements shown for a long time. Black pixels on an OLED are off, so they do not wear.
Why does my black screen look gray?
LCD screens cannot block the backlight completely, so black looks dark gray, especially in a dark room or from an angle. This is normal. OLED screens show true black.
How do I find stuck pixels with this tool?
Go full screen on black and look for bright dots. Then switch to red, green and blue to see which color the pixel is stuck on.
